CloseStrawberry Thief, one of William Morris's most iconic textile designs, depicts thrushes pilfering fruit from his garden at Kelmscott Manor. Morris employed the meticulous indigo dye printing method he favored, first attempting it in 1875 and finally achieving success in 1881. Delighted with the outcome, he registered the design. Incorporating red and yellow dyes into the blue and white ground, this discharge-printed pattern was labor-intensive, making it one of Morris & Co.'s priciest cottons. Despite its cost, it became a commercial hit, intended for curtains, wall hangings, or furniture covers, reflecting Morris's vision of interior decoration.
