Richard Shorty, a Northern Tutchone artist born in Whitehorse, Yukon in 1959, is self-taught and began painting wildlife and pop culture icons at an early age. He moved to Vancouver in 1978 and began exploring West Coast Native design in the early 1980s. By combining animal forms with traditional motifs, Richard developed a distinct style rooted in both his heritage and love of nature.
After relocating to Victoria in 1983, he refined his skills through books and mentorship from other artists. His work spans painting, carving, and design on drums, paddles, masks, and more. Public pieces include a mural at the Orwell Hotel in Vancouver. Now based in Vancouver, his art is featured in galleries and private collections around the world.
