With a mighty leap, a soul enters the afterlife, as imagined by artist Heidi Taillefer. Silkworm explores the dualities of life and death, light and dark, nature and technology. The ethereal work—a reverie that diffuses elements of varied world religions, mythologies, and cultures, as so much of Taillefer’s figurative surrealist art does—grounds itself through its details, from the finely wrought tracery inspired by Indonesian shadow puppets to its title, an allusion to an Eastern folktale. Here, Taillefer’s white birds not only carry messages of peace and protection, freedom and hope, they also usher the spirit on to whatever lies next.
