About the Artist

Jackie Traverse, an Ojibway artist from Lake St. Martin First Nation, was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Inspired by a visit to the Wahsa Gallery at age 13, she pursued art seriously later in life, earning a Fine Arts diploma from the University of Manitoba in 2009.

A multidisciplinary artist, Jackie works in painting, mixed media, sculpture, and stop-motion animation. Her work is rooted in Indigenous culture and the lived experiences of Indigenous women in Winnipeg, with a strong focus on community and women’s issues.

Her projects include animations on missing and murdered Indigenous women, the Sixties Scoop ("Two Scoops"), and a tribute to her mother ("Empty"). Widely recognized across Canada, Jackie uses art to highlight social issues and foster dialogue. Painting remains her greatest passion.
